church on time
Hurcules and I sat outside on the porch for a good part of this afternoon, mostly avoiding the cleaning lady, but also realxing, and enjoying the breeze and sun. In this time, when I was able to peel my eyes away from Monkey (book), I observed something interesting about grey little Hurc, and his actions towards other creatures.
All week an annoying sparow type thing has been pestering our ears with squaks and what not. Today was no different, and several times the birdie flew into and out of hearing, either intent on getting Hurc to go back inside, or searching for a mate. On several notable occasions Hurc would reply to the bird's tweets with a strange meowing, in which his stomach would contract and cause his voice to rattle in his throat. It's silly to admit, but he sounded almost as if he was mimicking the sparrow. Another theory is that Hurc was telling the bird to shove off, and shut up. In any case, his mewings did not tave off the quarrlesome bird, nor did it cause the bird to come any closer to be caught in Hurc's jaws, so perhaps he was just telling the bird to shut up in a non-commital sort of way.
Reflecting on this, I remember a time back with Cat in Texas. I came out into the backyard to call him inside. He came bounding out of the bushes, ready to follow me inside. Yet a bird called as he neared me, and Cat stopped in his tracks to turn towards the noise. He let out a similar, throaty, throbbing meow, and I had a similar notion of him imitating the bird in hopes it would come towards him.
Both Hurc and Cat are profficient in animal catching, Hurc probably more enthoused in it, being a younger cat. So i'm wondering if this mewing is a trick to bring creatures into grasp... hmm...
